Apple would end up opening a wide-reaching repair program to cover machines that were out of warranty, but afflicted with the problem. The iMac G5 was eventually replaced just over a year later with a newer model, the first Mac with an iSight camera built-in. Lowercase sound is the name given to a new genre in electronic music that is so extremely minimalist, it is almost silent.

So when Josh Russell, who runs leading lowercase record label Bremsstrahlung Recordings, needed to redesign his label's website, he chose a look based on the bare-bones, black-and-white interface of Apple's famous System 6 operating system.

System 6 was the Macintosh operating system circa 1989, the one that fits entirely on a single floppy disk. System 6 is instantly recognizable, with a simple, elegant, black-and-white interface.

For some, System 6 is the finest computer operating system ever made – the classic computer interface – the one that made the Macintosh famous as 'easy to use.'

It still has many fans who run it on ancient Macs that are often their main or only computer.

Bremsstrahlung Recordings' new website is just like the System 6 of old.

It looks just like the desktop of a 1980s compact Mac, such as a Mac Plus or Mac Classic.

Clicking around the site is exactly like navigating the old System 6 desktop. Different parts of the site are represented by familiar Macintosh icons. The icon for a floppy drive links to the main index page. A printer icon goes to the reviews page. The long-forgotten icon for switching floppy disks – a pair of floppies connected by arrows – leads to a library of MP3s.

And instead of advancing from page to page as in a traditional site, the Bremsstrahlung site recreates the tiling windows of the old Mac interface. Click on an icon and the page pops up as new window, stacked on top of the old one. To back up, the user clicks in the little square box in the window's top left-hand corner, just like an old Mac.

Its designer, Christopher Murphy, painstakingly created the entire site pixel by pixel in MacPaint and Photoshop. MacPaint is the black-and-white painting program that's one of four basic applications that came preinstalled on old Macs.

While it appears simple, the design was in fact incredibly demanding. Each page of the site is made of upwards of 20 Photoshop layers. 'I certainly didn't take straight screenshots,' Murphy said.

Murphy did some of the work on an old Mac Classic he found in a dumpster; some was done on a brand new Titanium PowerBook.

'In my studio I have one of the oldest Macs sitting alongside one of the newest Macs, and they're both used equally on a daily basis,' Murphy said. 'Most of my work is pixel-based, and the Classic is incredibly fast because the software footprints are so, so small.'

Murphy runs Fällt, an independent record label, design shop and publishing house in Belfast, Ireland.

Coincidentally, just before he found the Mac Classic, he had tried to buy one a few days earlier on eBay.

'On my way home one day I noticed a pristine Classic in a dumpster,' he said. 'I couldn't believe my luck.'

Murphy has also painted a series of oil-on-canvas pixel paintings, also inspired by the Classic. Measuring just 32 by 32 pixels – about the size of a computer icon – the paintings will be exhibited later this year in a gallery in Belfast.

'The point was to take the subject matter from one medium – the clean, digital perfection of the screen, to another – the less-precise world of traditional drawing and painting,' he said.

Murphy beat out different designers for the Bremsstrahlung website redesign because Russell liked Murphy's sense of stripped-down design.

'It's clean and minimal and goes with the music,' Russell said. 'It has similar aesthetics to lowercase sound. It works with very little and gets something of substance out of it. It's a very elegant design, and for a lot of people, it's nostalgic.'

How to get updates for macOS Mojave

If you have upgraded to macOS Mojave, follow these steps to keep it up to date:

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu , then click Software Update to check for updates.
  2. If any updates are available, click the Update Now button to install them. Or click ”More info” to see details about each update and select specific updates to install.

  4. When the App Store shows no more updates, your version of macOS and all of its apps are up to date. That includes Safari, iTunes, iBooks, Messages, Mail, Calendar, Photos, and FaceTime. Later versions may be available by upgrading your macOS.

To automatically download updates in the future, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, click App Store, then select ”Download newly available updates in the background.” Your Mac will notify you when updates are ready to install.
